This is the time of year when people start to experience the "winter blues." And this weather sure isn't helping any (last week in MD we got 2 snow storms). During this time many feel a change in mood (more anxious, less motivated, depression) or in sleep patterns (hitting snooze more, excessive sleepiness or even insomnia). Some people's appetites change or they feel fatigue. They may also seem more irritable or seek social isolation. If you feel any of these, here are 5 tips to help:
👟 Stay Active: Regular exercise can boost your mood by releasing endorphins, even in the winter. If you can't get outside for a walk, try the treadmill. Lift heavy weights or even do some yoga.
☀️ Get Sunlight: Lack of sunlight in winter can lead to seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Spend time outdoors during daylight hours (as long as it's not too cold). And try taking a vitamin-D supplement. This supplement can do wonders when you can get as much exposure to sunlight as you would in other times of the year.
🍎 Eat Healty: Maintain a balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and PROTEIN. Include foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids like salmon, which can help improve mood.
🥳 Stay Social: Social isolation can worsen the winter blues. Make an effort to connect with friends and family. Staying connected can provide mental and emotional support.
🌻 Plan for Spring: Look forward to the future by making plans for spring and summer. This can include vacation planning, hikes, gardening, or setting personal goals. Having something to look forward to can boost your spirits during the winter months.
